Clay family papers, 1810-1937.

This collection consists of letters, personal sketches, reminiscences, and other materials of the Clay family dating from 1810 to 1937. The letters consists of nine original letters, 1863-1899, with the Civil War and family matters being primary topics. The personal sketches include six typed manuscripts and copies of manuscripts, 1810-1937, containing a letter and a sketch of Joseph Clay, Jr.; a sketch and letter on the death of Thomas Savage Clay; resolutions of the Savannah Port Society on the death of Thomas Carolyn Clay; and a personal sketch of his life. The reminiscences consist of four items, three typewritten copies of recollections by Eliza C. Clay, written at Tivoli, Bryan County in 1848, and unsigned and undated reminiscences in a notebook. Also included in the collection are an anonymous sermon; an essay, "War," signed by "C.;" and a photocopy of Thomas Savage Clay's membership certificate for the Georgia Historical Society, 1839, signed by John Macpherson Berrien.

Joseph Clay, Jr. (1765-1811) was a prominent Georgia lawyer, Federalist judge, slaveholder, and minister. Joseph Clay's son, Thomas Savage Clay (1801-1849) attended Harvard, then assumed control of his father's rice and cotton plantations. when Thomas Savage Clay died, he gave his sister, Eliza Clay, control over his plantations and slaves.
